Obituary of Sam Neilly

Peacefully passed away at Roberta Place, Barrie on Tuesday, October 17, 2023 at 95 years of age.

Sam Neilly, better known as “The Mayor of Gilford”, was born and raised in Gilford and was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in the community. Sam was a hard-working farmer and served on many boards and committees: SCDSB trustee, Innisfil Hydro board member/Commissioner, Simcoe District Co-op board member/president. Sam was a proud member and elder of the Gilford United Church. Although Sam will best be remembered for his jokes, storytelling, and how grateful he was for everyone in his life, he also loved his family, friends, curling, golf, a good game of Euchre, and he never turned down an opportunity to sing and dance. 

Beloved husband of late Eleanor Neilly (nee Rate). Loving father of Lori (Brian) Sullivan, late Paula Neilly, Ian (Patricia) Neilly and Shelley (Darren) Nicoll. Proud Grandpa of Jessica, Rachel, Zoe, Aiden, and Dash. Dear brother of late Scott, late Isabelle, late Louis, late Carrie and Bill. Dear brother-in-law of Arlene (late Gerry) Pickering. Sam will also be fondly remembered by his nieces and nephews.

He will certainly be missed by all who knew him.

A celebration of Sam's life will be held at Skwarchuk Funeral Home, 30 Simcoe Rd., Bradford on Friday, October 27, 2023 from 4:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.
