Obituary of Lylia Gwendolyn Culbert
Passed away in her 99th year at Simcoe Manor in Beeton, ON on May 30th, 2022. She went to join her beloved husband, R.J. (Bus) Culbert and her grandson, Robert Arnold Young.
She left behind her daughter Nancy Young (Gord), Jim and Cheryl Stevens (Dave); her grandchildren Michael Young, Todd Armstrong (Victoria) and Kevin Armstrong; her great-grandchildren Sarah Young, Joshua Young, Remington Young, Lars Armstrong and Sutter Armstrong. Lylia will be fondly remembered by her nieces, nephews and cousins and many of her former students.
Lylia attended Steeles Corner P.S., Bradford District High and Graduated as a teacher from Toronto Normal School. She taught in Craigville, Bond Head S.S.#6 and S.S.#3 and Sir William Osler P.S. from where she retired. She was loved by her many Bond Head students and until their deaths, the Reynolds twins called her Mrs. Culbert. Until his death Ross Wallace (Craigville School 1942) would come to Mom’s birthday parties celebrating into her mid 90’s
Active in the I.O.D.E., she enjoyed curling with her husband Bus and their many friends and was a member of the United Church Women in Bradford.
On retirement, Mom and Dad travelled together and with their many friends and enjoyed playing Bid Euchre, which they brought to Bradford and taught the game to many people, who still enjoy the game today.
After Bus died, she remained in Bradford before moving to Roberta Place Retirement Lodge where she stayed for 12 years and then back to Bradford to the Elden, before moving to Simcoe Manor in Beeton to spend her final days.
Wherever Mom went, everyone loved her smile. One of her care givers at the Elden said that if she was having a bad day, she just went to see Lylia and got a Lylia smile. She was a gentle, happy lady who was a wonderful mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
Even though she will be missed, she is with her beloved Bus, her sweetheart from high school.
Her family would like to thank all her caregivers who looked after Mom through her final years.
Cremation followed by a private family service and burial at Bond Head United Church Cemetery.
Donations can be made to Palliative floor at Southlake Regional Health Centre or Toronto Sick Kids Hospital.
