Rod and I met when he had a fire at the Dairy of our group of companies (Western Creamery) and we spent a Sunday together, dealing with the mess; soon thereafter he came over to David Ashley as General Manager. We hit it off right away and he introduced a good friend of his, Hawman Motors - Rod liked to change cars like others change their clothes - frequently..The dealer, Stew also became a friend and we ended up as his major car-leasing customer, with up to 35 units across the country. Rod could change cars as often as he wanted, since he was the boss. One sticks in my mind for a short-lived engagement, a Ford SHO which lasted one week! ''What a piece of a tin-can, get me something decent'', was his comment after a short drive, and Rod went back to a GM vehicle.
After Rod left us for ''greener fields'' in Government, he and Fran started the annual Super Bowl Party - first mostly guys only (plus Sandy !), then some wives eventually came into the group and a lot of fun and good food was had by all. Fran's Chili was legendary. This lasted until COVID put the brakes on all that, and over twenty years of Super Bowl parties at their place came to an end.
And now we must say our final good-byes - again, because Stew left us a few weeks earlier.
